What is Link Exchange?
The process of placing a link of a page from site A to a page of site B in order to gain traffic and/popularity for site A is called Link Exchange. Sometimes another link of a page from site B is also added on a page of site A, then it is called a reciprocal Link Exchange.
What is the Link Exchange Paradox?
If a site is popular it can get link exchanges easily. But in order to become popular a site, it needs link exchanges.
What does it mean?
Lets take an example. The Chronicles of R, during the initial days, was not as popular as it is today. During that time I really had to work hard to get link exchanges. The process involved numerous hours on the internet trying to find out sites of the same niche, writing to them requesting for a link exchange and waiting for their reply which often was negative.
But once The Chronicles of R showed an increase in its readership, it became quite easy to get a link in exchange. If you might remember, a few months back, I collected a set of 42 tweets of wisdom about "real men" by Hugh McLeod. When he took a look at the collection, he gave me a link without even asking for it. And that alone gave the page a PR 4.
The Link Exchange Paradox explains the importance of why a writing good articles are not enough for increasing the traffic of a website, a Link Exchange is a must.
Who invented the term Link Exchange Paradox?

So many people are saying link exchange does not work and is frowned upon by search engines.but its wrong then why hundreds of thousands of blog do like this and no problems?this is really work great post.
A link exchange is a confederation of websites that operates similarly to a web ring. Webmasters register their web sites with a central organization, that runs the exchange, and in turn receive from the exchange HTML code which they insert into their web pages.
This is a very helpful topic for the people working for web marketing. Link popularity is so much important for visibility of a web site. Thanks for sharing the knowledge.
When I first start reading this, I thought you were going to talk about how reciprocal link exchanges weren't very valuable for Google search rankings because Google discounts reciprocal links. I suppose you could call that the Reciprocal Link Exchance Paradox, or R-LEP for short, lol
But I can definitely see where you're coming from with this post. It's one of the many "catch 22" problems in life. You need experience to get a job, but you need a job to get experience, for example. There are usually ways around the problem, but they are rarely easy.

You are right this is a paradox. I can be hard work to get popular. It is just to keep on doing you home work

Yeah inbound links are one of these things, everybody wants them to be popular to get more but who do you get popular by already having a lot of links :>

indeed a link exchange can increase traffic but does not increase google page rank. Google does not recognize a link exchange to get page rank. But very useful exchange links to increase traffic

First of I'd like to say that you came up with a great term (Link Exchange Paradox)..I just love it..sounds great...
And as far as the link exchange itself goes..yeah it trully is a paradox..I mean when you are down don't even fit within the first 1000 google results and have pr0 nobody wants to do business with you..or to be more precise you have a hard time finding anyone that would allow you to leave you link cause basically it's worthless to them and once you get up that ladder you can't get rid of all the email requests for link exchange...
